Detailed description of Sugarloaf Course

Valley of the Moon Club, previously named Oakmont Golf Course, is a 36 hole private facility. The Valley of the Moon courses are located in Santa Rosa, California. The two 18 hole courses are named the Valley of the Moon Course (previously the West Course) and the Sugarloaf Course (previously the East Course).

The Valley of the Moon Course is a par 72 course while the Sugarloaf Course is an Executive par 63 course.

The Sugarloaf Course has been frequently referred to as one of Northern California's most challenging executive courses. While it was a golf course designed for seniors and beginners, it has become a challenge for all types of golfers.

Classed as an executive layout, Sugarloaf, with its large greens, 45 well-placed bunkers, heritage oak trees, water hazards, and scenic views of the Annadel State Park Forest, combine for a very enjoyable experience for all golfers.

The Sugarloaf Course opened in 1963. The course was designed by Ted Robinson.

The course par is 63, rating 61.2 and slope 100.

While the west course is a better test, I think the East is just as much fun, and much more fun if you're playing after a long layoff or just want to feel good about your game. Forgiving, but never boring and a good value.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Oakmont East is (for me) a challenging executive-style course. Par is 63, but it could be higher. There are several 200 yard par 3 holes from the white tees. Also their signature hole is a 170 yd par 3 requiring a tee shot carrying about 160 yds to clear a creek, and straight as an arrow to clear large oaks protecting both sides of the green--and if you are too long, you are in a bunker. In my opinion, the course puts a high premium on accuracy and distance control. The layout is interesting and unique. Even though it is surrounded by houses, they are set back enough that they are not a problem or a distraction.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area

Greens still bumpy from plugging. Rough impenetrable. many lost balls. Wet conditions apparently impede mowing at this time. A great and challenginf "executive course" with great views.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Ranks with the best in this price level

A challenging executive course (par 63) in a gorgeous setting! It was in great shape as of November 2007. This is also among the best draining courses in the area - I play there all winter.

Would travel: 60 - 120 miles
Bottom line: Ranks with the best in this price level
